Our Rakaia-based client is a well-respected, locally owned engineering business specialising in agricultural maintenance, welding, and fabrication services across Canterbury. Due to continued growth and increasing demand, they are looking for an Agricultural Maintenance Welder to join their close-knit team on a permanent basis. About the Role
No two days are the same. You’ll meet at the Rakaia workshop each morning before travelling with the team to farms throughout Canterbury, carrying out a wide range of agricultural maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and installation work.

Working both in the workshop and on-site, you’ll help keep Canterbury farms operating efficiently through preventative maintenance, emergency breakdown repairs, equipment upgrades, and custom fabrication.

You’ll also work directly with farmers and rural clients, so strong communication skills and a professional approach are just as important as your technical ability.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out maintenance and repair welding on dairy sheds, feed pads, silos, stockyards, water systems, irrigation infrastructure, and other farm facilities.
• Fabricate, repair and install steel gates, rails, platforms, handrails, brackets, pipework, and structural steel components.
• Perform maintenance and repairs on augers, conveyors, hoppers, grain handling equipment, trailers, and other agricultural machinery.
• Complete emergency breakdown repairs to minimise downtime during busy farming periods.
• Assist with dairy plant upgrades, alterations, and installation of new farm infrastructure.
• Perform MIG, flux core, and solid wire welding to a high standard in both workshop and field environments.
• Read workshop drawings and fabricate components to specification.
• Operate workshop machinery including grinders, drills, saws, presses, cutting equipment, and other engineering tools safely and efficiently.
• Diagnose faults on-site and provide practical repair solutions.
• Build strong working relationships with farmers and rural clients through professional communication and excellent customer service.
• Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work environment while following all health and safety procedures.

Skills & Experience
Whether you’re an experienced Agricultural Maintenance Welder or an established welder looking to move into the agricultural engineering industry, we’d love to hear from you.

To be successful you’ll have:

• A minimum of 2 years’ welding experience in fabrication, engineering, structural steel, manufacturing, heavy industry, or a similar environment.
• Experience with MIG, flux core, and solid wire welding.
• Good fabrication skills and the ability to work from drawings or fabricate independently.
• Agricultural engineering or dairy farm maintenance experience is highly regarded but not essential. If you’ve got solid welding skills and the right attitude, training will be provided.
• A practical, hands-on approach with excellent problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with farmers, rural clients, and your team.
• The ability to work independently, use initiative, and take pride in producing high-quality workmanship.
• A willingness to learn and develop your skills within the agricultural engineering industry.
• A current full New Zealand driver’s licence.
• A strong commitment to health and safety.
